Monaco
Press release
Initiative
Faced with the undeniable level of plastic pollution in the Mediterranean, urgent action is needed. According to the Mare Plasticum report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than 200,000 tonnes of plastic are dumped into the Mediterranean every year.
In this context, Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) is launching its 10th Call for Micro-Initiatives (CMI). This programme aims to provide financial support for concrete field projects to combat plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region.
A funding opportunity for Mediterranean countries
A call for projects such as the one launched by BeMed is a real opportunity for accelerating the reduction of plastic pollution in Mediterranean coastal and in-lands areas heavily impacted by this pollution.
The countries eligible for this call are Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Croatia, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Monaco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Tunisia and Turkey.
Priority will be given to the following countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia, and Turkey.
A regional dynamic already underway
More than 120 projects have already been supported around the Mediterranean, from raising awareness among children in Tunisia to data collection in Spain and support for the hotel sector in Albania.
With this support, BeMed aims to create regional momentum in the fight against plastic pollution and to bring together Mediterranean stakeholders committed to increasing the effectiveness of local actions.

What is a micro-initiative?
A micro-initiative is a local project aimed at reducing plastic pollution in a Mediterranean area, supported by a micro-grant. It contributes to reducing the production and use of plastic at source, raising public awareness, improving waste management, collecting scientific data and supporting the implementation of new regulations. These actions are designed to be replicable and to inspire other actors across the Mediterranean basin.
