Greece’s Ministerial Decree Paves the Way for Stronger Conservation Efforts

A New Hope for the Mediterranean Monk Seal:

On September 9th, 2024, Greece marked a defining moment for the future of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) with the release of a crucial Ministerial Decree, for which the Monk Seal Alliance was mobilized.This decree establishes a National Action Plan (NAP) dedicated to securing the survival of this endangered species and safeguarding its vital marine habitats. As the species faces increasing pressures from human activity, this decree represents a much-needed commitment from Greece, home to over half of the global monk seal population. The decree ensures that we now have the legal foundation to protect essential breeding and resting areas while addressing threats from tourism and fisheries. The National Action Plan focuses on:

• Ensuring population recovery: Supporting the ongoing growth of the monk seal population, focusing on their health, genetic diversity, and reproductive success.
• Protecting critical habitats: Preserving and restoring key coastal and marine areas crucial for monk seal survival.
• Mitigating human impacts: Minimizing negative interactions between seals and humans by promoting responsible practices in tourism and fishing sectors

This decree not only aligns perfectly with the core mission of the Monk Seal Alliance but also strengthens our ability to create lasting change. It gives us the momentum to:
