One Young World Summit 2024

Initiative

From September 18 to 21, five members of the RE.GENERATION cohort – Sheherazade, Carla Gautier, Gab Mejia, Sue Whisky, and Nisreen Elsaim – participated in the One Young World Summit in Montreal. These young leaders, representing diverse backgrounds and expertise, participated in various sessions focused on climate change, conservation, and social justice.

Climate Change and Community Resilience

On September 19, Carla Gautier, Sheherazade, and Gab Mejia participated in a session facilitated by the Prince Albert II Monaco Foundation, and moderated by Théo Panizzi, RE.GENERATION Initiative Manager. Entitled "Climate Change: Threats and Solutions with Communities," the session explored innovative strategies to build climate resilience in local communities. The participants shared their perspectives on the challenges faced by communities in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Indonesia due to climate change and discussed the importance of collective action.

Conservation and Aquatic Ecosystems

Another highlight of the summit was the "Icons Panel: The Cause for Conservation, why it matters now more than ever." Joined by renowned environmentalist David Suzuki, Sue Whisky discussed the urgent need to protect our seas and rivers. The panel emphasized the critical actions required to preserve aquatic ecosystems and promote environmental sustainability.

Healthcare Equity and Intersectionality

Nisreen Elsaim participated in a session titled "Why Intersectionality? Achieving Social Justice in Healthcare Systems." The session focused on the barriers faced by many in accessing healthcare and the importance of an intersectional approach to address these challenges. Nisreen discussed the role of advocacy in achieving healthcare equity and ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare.

Global News Podcast

Sheherazade also participated in a live recording of the BBC World Service's Global News Podcast. Joined by Justin Langan, Executive Director of O’KANATa, and Farkhunda Muhtaj, a professional soccer player and activist, she shared her perspectives on the world's most pressing issues and discussed the potential impact of young leaders.

The RE.GENERATION Future Leaders Programme is committed to empowering young people to become agents of change. The participation of these five young leaders at the One Young World summit is a testament to their dedication to making a positive impact on the world. Their engagement in discussions on climate change, healthcare equity, and intersectionality demonstrates their commitment to creating a more sustainable and just future.
