Monaco
This year, the European Union will be hosting the international conference “Our Ocean”, in Malta on 5th and 6th October 2017. This high-level meeting will bring together public policy makers and civil society to develop new paths of action to combat marine pollution and the degradation of ecosystems.
As such, the European Commission has asked aquariums everywhere to take part in this joint action to raise awareness of marine waste on a global scale. The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation have been working towards the launch of this campaign, which took place on 27th July 2017. Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner in charge of Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Erik Soljem, Director General of UNEP were present at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, alongside HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco for the event.
On this occasion, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation hosted a stand devoted to the BeMed Task Force in which the Prince Albert II Foundation, the Surfrider Foundation Europe, the Tara Expeditions Foundation, the Mava Foundation and IUCN have been involved together since 2015, in order to raise awareness and mobilise civil society in regard to concrete action against plastic pollution in the Mediterranean.
