Implementation of a biogeographic conservation strategy for flora in continental Mediterranean France

The French Mediterranean is one of the regions of highest biodiversity in France and in the Mediterranean basin. It is home to one of the regional hotspots for Mediterranean biodiversity, as well as several refuge areas. The exceptional biological diversity of the ecosystems of the Mediterranean region has been underlined even more recently, in the face of the current crisis of species extinction and the environmental changes which threaten this unique biological heritage.

The implementation of a mutualized approach to the conservation of biodiversity is essential because this Mediterranean territory of high biological value is seriously threatened by the anthropogenic impacts which are exerted, and by the powerful and rapid ecological and climatic changes.

In the face of these trends, members of various conservation, management and research organizations are finding that they have common interests in botany, ecology, population biology, conservation biology, restoration ecology, population genetics and biogeographic conservation.

The "RESeau D'Acteurs pour la conservation de la flore méditerranéenne", RESEDA-Flore was created in 2018 in France. It brings together 15 scientific, conservation and management organizations that have signed a charter to foster collective dynamics with a view to helping the conservation and sustainable management of species and habitats, based on an integrated approach.

This network promotes the emergence of new approaches and techniques for the sustainable and evolutionary conservation of species and natural environments, in close collaboration with the various conservation stakeholders and will concern several endangered species on the IUCN red lists and priority habitats such as wetlands.
