Human development through the distribution of energy-efficient wood cookers

Throughout the entire African continent, 50% of energy needs for heating or cooking purposes are met through burning wood, charcoal, agricultural waste and animal excrement. Moreover, wood is the primary source of energy for many Guinean families.

However, the use of biomass is not without consequences for the environment and scarce resources, leading to significant pressure on vegetation as well as substantial deforestation.

The project consists of structuring a regional market for energy efficient wood cookers which were the focus of an initial project in 2010 in the Kindia region in Guinea.  With very low wood consumption, these cookers use up to 8 times less wood than traditional cookers, thus improving the living conditions of the inhabitants and reducing the impact on the forests.

The aim is to extend this project to Lower Guinea, by promoting and marketing 500 energy efficient wood cookers and by structuring an economic sector based on these cookers in Lower Guinea. At the same time, the association will continue its Gold Standard certification efforts so that the purchase price of the cookers drops thanks to funding from the voluntary carbon offset market.
