?Sfécologie 2016 was a conference dedicated to the ecological sciences, held in Marseilles from 24 to 28 October 2016. Organised by the Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Ecology (IMBE), this was the third conference of the French Society of Ecology (SFé), a scholarly society that aims to promote and unite the ecological disciplines in all their diversity, and thus raise their profile in France. After the success of the 2014 event in Lille, which brought together nearly 1,200 participants, this new international conference provided a platform for some 900 researchers, academics, students and professionals to communicate, discuss and share information about the latest advances in fundamental and applied research in ecology.
The main objectives of Sfécologie 2016 were to stimulate discussion and debate centred around the discipline’s key issues, to promote knowledge sharing, the pooling of ideas and experiences, and the development of national and international collaborations, particularly around the Mediterranean. Global change, biodiversity conservation, the evolution of ecosystems, changes in farming practices, land use development, food security, the health of humans and of ecosystems... All these challenges, and many more, were at the heart of Sfécologie 2016.
